The Duolingo English Test is aimed at students who need to demonstrate their English proficiency in order to enter a university.
The exam has many advantages over IELTS or TOEFL including:
- It can be taken from home at any time;
- It is much cheaper ($49);
- Results are released faster (2 days);
- The test is much shorter (one hour).

Where is Duolingo accepted?
More than 3,500 institutions accept the Duolingo English Test in many different countries. This includes well-known universities such as Yale, John Hopkins, Duke and many more.
Duolingo is not accepted for immigration.
Exam Contents
The Duolingo English Test has a number of different question types. In some parts of the test, it is computer adaptive. This means that questions will be harder or easier based on previous answers.
The computer adaptive parts of the test are:
- Naming pictures
- Yes/No vocabulary
- C-test
- Reading aloud
- Dictation
- Interactive reading
- Interactive listening
Several types of questions are not computer adaptive. These are:
- Speaking about a picture
- Speaking about a written prompt
- Speaking about a spoken prompt
- Writing about a picture
- Writing about a written prompt
Some parts of the test are also ungraded but sent to the institution which is being applied to. These are:
- Ungraded speaking
- Ungraded writing
Practicalities
The Duolingo English Test takes less than one hour to complete and the results are released in 2 days.
The test can be done from your home if you have access to a computer with an internet connection.
The results are valid for two years and the test can be sat three times in a 30 day period.
